Powell served the S.C. Republican Party as its chair at a critical time in its development, 1971 to 1974. The election of 1974 was a turning point for the Party, seeing the victory of James B. Edwards, the first Republican governor of the state since Reconstruction.
Collection Finding Aid
The collection chiefly documents Powell's political activities as a candidate for
public office and chairman of both the Richland County Republican Party and South
Carolina Republican Party, 1971-1975.
