Cartiff

Brian Cartiff, Ph.D.

Brian Cartiff is a postdoctoral scholar in the Institute for Measurement Methodology in Rural STEM Education (IMMERSE) program in the College of Education. He received his Ph.D. in Education from the Learning Sciences and Psychological Studies program in the School of Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has over twenty years of experience as a K-12 chemistry and environmental science teacher. His research interests involve how people’s epistemic cognition and nature of science understanding affect their understanding of socioscientific issues. He also pursues research into cognitive biases and interventions to help people avoid them. He is excited to be part of the IMMERSE team investigating STEM education in rural contexts.

Svetlana Dmitrieva

Svetlana Dmitrieva, Ph.D.

Svetlana Dmitrieva received her Ph.D. in Gifted Education from the University of Virginia. Her research focuses on equity issues in gifted education in rural schools and achievement motivation of gifted learners. Previously, Svetlana has taught English as a Foreign Language in secondary schools and worked on a number of United Nations Development Programme projects in Ukraine and Russia.
